Digital Repository Architecture

Given the amount of material being developed for online delivery, it is becoming increasingly important to manage learning objects in a way that provides for consistency, ease of access, reusability and currency, and which allows for continuous improvement and updating. TANZ is currently undertaking a research project which will make recommendations on the most appropriate framework for addressing issues relating to standards, protocols and templates, and the general system architecture.

John Wynn-Williams, leading the research project, said that this "is a great opportunity to apply the work that has been done overseas in this area and to contribute to a much needed discussion nationally. Creating repositories of local digital material is a growing area in the library field. Emphasis is quickly shifting from providing access to resources within institutions to searching across the resources of other institutions nationally and internationally. The key to this is the consistent application of standards. I'll be linking in with initiatives at The Ministry of Education and the National Library of New Zealand to ensure that any TANZ repository is interoperable with systems nationally and internationally."
